South African Tennis: From Kevin Anderson to Lloyd Harris
South Africa has a proud tennis history. Kevin Anderson remains the country's standout modern player, a former world number five who reached the finals of the US Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2018, where his marathon semi-final is part of the tournament's folklore. Lloyd Harris has carried the flag in the years since, breaking into the top 50 and beating top-10 opponents on the biggest stages. South African fans follow the Grand Slams closely, and the tours pass through nearby regions on the way to the major events. Follow the live ATP and WTA scores on ScoresLive throughout the season.

Tennis Betting Strategies for South African Punters
Match Winner
The simplest and most popular tennis bet. In a lopsided match at a big tournament, a top-5 player can be priced at 1.15 against a qualifier. The set handicap of -1.5 offers better value on straight-sets wins. In tighter match-ups between players ranked from 10 to 30, the real value appears in the standard match-winner market.
First-Set Winner
Bet on a player to win just the first set. It is ideal for players who start strongly but sometimes let a lead slip, or for backing a lower-ranked player who can take the opening set before the favourite's class tells in the second and third.
Tournament Winner Bet
The outright tournament-winner bet at the Grand Slams and the Masters 1000 is one of the most popular markets in South Africa. A futures bet on a player at long odds can produce a big payout if they go deep in the draw. It is best placed weeks in advance, before the draw and the players' form adjust the odds.
Responsible Gambling
Betting should always be fun. Never chase losses or risk money you cannot afford. Set deposit limits and take breaks when you need them. In South Africa, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation runs a free, confidential helpline on 0800 006 008 (responsiblegambling.org.za). For over-18s only.

Kevin Anderson is South Africa's standout modern player, a former world number five who reached the US Open final in 2017 and the Wimbledon final in 2018. Lloyd Harris has been the country's leading player since, breaking into the top 50 and beating top-10 opponents at the majors. ScoresLive carries live scores whenever South African players are in action on the ATP and WTA tours.
There are four Grand Slams a year. The Australian Open is played in January in Melbourne. Roland Garros, on clay, is played in Paris in May and June. Wimbledon, on grass, is in London in June and July. The US Open, on hard court, is in New York in August and September. Men's Grand Slam matches are best of five sets and women's are best of three. They are the most prestigious events in tennis and award the most ranking points.
Jannik Sinner of Italy holds the top spot in the ATP ranking in 2026, after winning the Australian Open and the US Open in 2024. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, a four-time Grand Slam champion, is his closest rival. Novak Djokovic, with 24 Grand Slams, remains competitive despite his age. On the WTA tour, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and Iga Swiatek of Poland have dominated, both with several Grand Slams to their names.
Yes. Tennis betting operates in South Africa under licences issued by provincial gambling boards under the National Gambling Board, with the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board a key licensing authority. The minimum age to bet is 18. Licensed operators such as Hollywoodbets, Betway, Supabets, Sportingbet and Sunbet offer markets on the Grand Slams and the Masters 1000.
Wimbledon 2026 is played in late June and early July 2026 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London. It is the oldest and most prestigious Grand Slam and the only one played on grass. It begins on the last Monday of June and runs for two weeks. Carlos Alcaraz won back-to-back Wimbledon titles in 2023 and 2024 and draws strong interest in the betting markets.
The Masters 1000 are the highest-ranked tournaments on the ATP tour after the Grand Slams. There are nine events: Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris. Winning a Masters 1000 earns 1000 ranking points. They bring together the world's top 20 and are effectively compulsory for the elite players.
Tennis is one of the most popular sports for betting in South Africa. The markets include match winner, correct set score, first-set winner, total games over/under, game or set handicaps, ace markets and tournament winner. Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open generate the biggest betting volumes. Licensed operators such as Hollywoodbets, Betway and Supabets offer full tennis markets. For over-18s only.
The rules vary between bookmakers. Many void the bet completely if a player retires before finishing the match. Others pay out if the first set is complete and your player was ahead. Always check the retirement rules of your bookmaker before betting, especially at big tournaments where a mid-match retirement is more common due to heat or physical strain.
The handicap in tennis is applied to games or sets. Backing a clear favourite at -4.5 games means they must win the match by at least 5 games more than their opponent across all sets. A set handicap of -1.5 means they must win 2-0 in a best-of-three match. The games handicap offers good value for dominant clay-court specialists against lower-ranked rivals.
The set-score bet asks you to predict the exact result of the match in sets. In a best-of-three match, the options are 2-0 or 2-1 for either player. In a best-of-five Grand Slam, the options include 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2. A 2-0 on a clear favourite pays little, but correctly calling a 2-1 can pay far more than a simple match-winner bet.
Yes. Over/under markets on total aces are available at the leading bookmakers. Big servers regularly hit more than 20 aces a match. You can also bet on a player to record a set number of aces or to serve more aces than their opponent. Grass-court matches, such as those at Wimbledon, produce far more aces than clay-court matches.
The ATP is the body that governs men's professional tennis and the WTA the women's. Both tours run parallel seasons with Grand Slams, Masters 1000 events, called WTA 1000 on the women's side, and season-ending finals. The Grand Slams award equal prize money to both. The Davis Cup is the men's team event and the Billie Jean King Cup the women's.
